The song seems to be the author stating how he wants to tackle every obstacle and run away with his girlfriend 'Mary' (chorus). From the lake to the garden to watch the stars next to the fireside, the author states how he would go anywhere with her. There also seems to be an unseen motive as the author says anywhere is better than here. Perhaps there is something in their current area preventing their relationship (such as their parents).

The hint in the next verse may indicate that the two are alcoholics (too much wine, driving me insane) to the point where they'll miss out on important things such as train destinations. They also seem to not care about the people around them, with the author going so far as to say "oh well, too bad, who cares, it's alright". These may also be factors that make the author want to get out of town due to their infamy in their hometown.

The interlude gives the naive view of the author, with him claiming how as long as we will stick together in hell, we'll run in rows of sunshine, we'll watch it rise and shine forever. This shows how the author believes their young love can last them through anything despite the bitter circumstances, not willing to accept facts and trying to make everything look better than they are in their fantasy world.

Sixteen and a son of a bitch
Got a gun and a strychnine twitch
Little girl on the graveyard shift
Out of control and doesn't give a shit

I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down.
I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down.

Gonna lose control!
So stop, drop, and roll.

So, baby-doll, don't you lose your touch.
You take it all cause it's never gonna take too much.

Dirty mouth and the look of death.
My tequila coming' from your breath.
Your lips are like a cherry bomb with teeth
Losing control, break my sanity.

I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down.
I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down.

Gonna lose control!
So stop, drop, and roll.

So, baby-doll, don't you lose your touch.
You take it all cause you're never gonna take too much.
Whoo!

I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down.
I don't wanna go down. I don't wanna go down.

Gonna lose control!
So stop, drop, and roll.

Alright!

So, baby-doll, don't you lose your touch.
You take it all 'cause you're never gonna take too...
Losing control and you lose your touch.
You take it all, 'cause you're never gonna take too much.

“(It's about) the culture of mass shooting that happens in America mixed with narcissistic social media. There’s this sort of rage happening, but it’s also now being filmed and we all have ourselves under surveillance, to me, that is so twisted. To get into the brain of someone like that was freaky. It freaked me out. After I wrote it, all I wanted to do was get that out of my brain because it just freaked me out.”

- Billie Joe Armstrong

The fastest, most aggressive song on the album is also the first single, and the first song Armstrong wrote for the project. “It was refreshing that it came so naturally to write a song like ‘Bang Bang,'” he says, “which is one of the best punk songs I’ve ever scribbled. And it just sort of happened. I didn’t think about it too much. I showed it to the guys. I’m like, ‘This feels like Green Day.’ I showed it to Mike and Tre and they were floored.” On the track, Armstrong sings from the perspective of a psychotic mass shooter (“I am a semiautomatic lonely boy/You’re dead/I’m well fed”). “The scary thing was when I went into the character’s head,” says Armstrong. “I started getting dizzy.”
- Rolling Stone

The song starts off with a radio broadcast about executions by terrorists.

In the first verse, the author is seen as an unstable, violent individual. He seems to be preparing for something and is clearly nervous and excited about it (I'm sweating bullets like a modern Romeo). The chorus shows that the author is willing to kill people for fame (bang, bang, give me fame) or die trying (shoot me up for entertainment). He shows his viewpoint by saying how the victims on screen dead while the shooters remain well-fed. The line I am a semi-automatic lonely boy may imply that the author is someone who has been ignored and shunned and now he wants to get back at everyone.

The next verse shows how the author sees these killings again and again (I testify like a lullaby of memories) and how the same group and people are mentioned again for their actions (broadcasting live and it's on my radio). The author may be using the word photobomb as to mean how these actions are disrupting the daily news and Vietnam may imply how he saw the Vietnam war in the past via media. He also makes a reference to the extremist terrorists saying how everyone knows the truth but refuses to accept it to continue their 'fame' across the world. (I love a lie just like anybody else).

The next chorus shows the author’s intentions to start out as a celebrity martyr, someone who dies as a result of an extremist terrorist attack or fighting them. He wants to be the leading man of his own private drama and hero of the hour, being the one to orchestrate the whole fiasco. The author expresses his interest in terrorists (It’s my private move (Holy War)) and how he believes by being like them he would get on the screen for his moment of fame. World War Zero may imply how his actions are not widespread enough to affect everyone, but its enough to stir up trouble within his area or country.

The song could possibly be about a deranged, lonely school shooter with influences from the media using excuses such as propaganda from the Vietnam war or ISIS as a easy way to point the blame for his actions. With a clear view that nothing will change from the actions of the big

- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Do you want to elope tonight
Getting lost in the shadows
All dressed up like a switchblade knife
Let's hang in love from the gallows

Or we can take a walk around the lake
There's a garden in the park there
Under the stars next to the fireside

anywhere is better than here

Oh Mother Mary, take my hand
I'll be a saint, I'll be your man
I'll do most anything, 'cause I don't care ...
Oh Mother Mary, take my hand.

Take a ride on the midnight train
We'll fall asleep at the station
Too much wine, driving me insane
And then we'll miss our destination

Oh well, too bad, who cares, it's all right.
As long as we will stick together
In hell we'll run in rows of sunshine
We'll watch it rise and shine forever

Oh Mother Mary, take my hand
I'll be a saint, I'll be your man
I'll do most anything, 'cause I don't care ...
Oh Mother Mary, take my hand.

Fourteenth street, booze and swallow
I'm gonna drown my sorrow
Dirty floors and sticky tables
For the willing and the able

All the zombies on a hot Friday night
Going down to the Ruby Room
I'm gonna meet my doom
By the name of Rosie May
She's the night pick of the day, yeah

Lucky Strike and I will travel
WooHoo
As a Pabst Blue Ribbon unravels
WooHoo
Gonna drink my hard earned pay
WooHoo
'Cause it doesn't matter anyway, yeah
WooHoo
Seeing double on a one last one night stand

Goin' down to the Ruby Room
I'm gonna meet my doom
By the name of Rosie May
She's the midnight pick of the day, yeah!

Going down to the Ruby Room

Going down to the Ruby Room
I'm gonna meet my doom
By the name of Rosie May
She's the midnight pick of the day, yeah, yeah!

Going down to the Ruby Room

The song is about Mary (the main character of the album) during her period as she begins to feel her hour of darkness coming as her crippling pains slowly makes her feel hopeless. She feels lifeless with a heart of purple, with sad dancehall music playing in the background.

The chorus describes her confusion. She doesn't know what to do as her red tide sets in.

The second verse describes her expressionless face of confusion. She doesn't know what to feel anymore with the pain. She tries to find ways to get rid of her pain (witching hour) as she feels herself getting weaker and weaker (as the summer loses power), the summer representing her.

The interlude shows her holding in the pain (this is where her heart will not die) and losing a bit of love (Mary's breaking your kiss goodnight)

The song ends with more confusion as the chorus fades out.

- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Mary's in her hour of darkness
Everything she feels is hopeless
Disconnected from the dancehall
Tripping on her heart of purple

Is this passion or...
Or your red tide

Faces of her bleak expression
Taking on her town's impression
Tis' the season's witching hour
As the summer loses power

Is this passion or...
Or your red tide

Mary's breaking your kiss goodnight
This is where her heart will not die

Is this passion or...
Or your red tide
Or your red tide
Or your red tide

I, I'm just killing time now
I do it all the time now
And it's killing me

I, I polish off the bottle
I'm throwing down the throttle
Drinking gasoline

Now I'm on my way
Driving down Broadway
Wasting all my time
And I won't be late
Cause I'm on the brake
So don't hesitate
Never make it out
And it's killing me

Do, Do you get the feeling
That you've been bleeded
Cause now you're bleeding me

You, You're spilling all the wine now
On Hollywood and Vine now
It's Lushotology

Now I'm on my way
Driving down Broadway
Wasting all my time
And I won't be late
Cause I'm on the brake
So don't hesitate
Never make it out
And it's killing me

I, I'm just killing time now
I do it all the time now
and it's killing me

The introduction is Mary stating how she’s an independent woman who doesn’t need no man. The perspective shifts to the author who’s calling for Mary (come out tonight, you could be my valentine) as he gets attracted to her overwhelming presence (you’re centre stage, the soul for the new age). The author degrades himself to that of a leper and how Mary is his only salvation (read me my last rite).

The author shows how he’s nothing much (a broken invalid) but he can show her a good time (would you drink my wine, we could live on stolen time). He wouldn’t have it any other way then to live a life full of grace and sin whilst religiously worshiping Mary; to the point of cultist behaviour (I’m crucified, drink my blood).

The song ends with the author begging for more (gimme, gimme, gimme) as he just can’t get enough of Mary.

- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Mary, come out tonight
You could be my valentine
Mary, you're center stage
You're the soul for the new age

I will be the leper
Read me my last rite
A crippled believer
Gimme sight
Whoo!!

Mary, would you make a bid
On a broken invalid
Marie, would you drink my wine
We could live on stolen time

I will be the leper
Read me my last rite
A crippled believer
Gimme sight

Mary, full of grace and sin.
Throwing caution to the wind
Mary, I'm crucified
Drink my blood coming from my eyes

I will be your leper
Read me my last rite
A crippled believer
Gimme sight

Gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme gimme

Well, come on baby take a chance
And get your shit together
Well, come on baby take a risk
Until it comes out right

Drop your shadow on a subway wall
Back in the saddle, you can hear the call
Come on baby take a chance
And get your shit together

Well your illusion ain't a lie
It's a crime

Ride, ride Sally ride
Hop on and take a ride
On my motorbike

Singin', ride, ride Sally ride
Like the speed of light on a road rage suicide

Well, now is the time
'Cause I ain't got the time forever
Well, now is the time
So you better put up a fight

Drop your shadow on a subway wall
Back in the saddle, you can hear the call
Well, now is the time

Your illusion
Ain't a lie it's a crime

Ride, ride Sally ride

Ya alligator, ya space-invader,

Start your moving,

But stop your foolin' around
Ya agitator, ya trouble-maker
Don't stand so close to my ground

The author brings many comparisons to modern day society (it don't take a genius to be an idiot, it don't take a Jesus to save my soul) and tells how he doesn't need a reason to fit in (I don't need a reason to be a misfit whatever the reason how far I'll go). He says how he'll take his time and he doesn't need anyone to rush or tell him what to do because, at the end of the day, he knows that he'll get to whatever he's aiming for (when it's my time then I will let you know). He states that he's a mere pedestrian in his life, simply walking through his life at his own pace (pedestrian is what I am) even if it means that he has to go at it alone at times.

While he doesn't have the answer to everyone's questions and reasoning to why he should speed up or do things with alternative methods (I don't have the answer to be specific), at the end of the day he states how as long as his own reasoning is sound, he doesn't need to listen to anyone else since he knows himself better than anyone (I listen to reason, the reason is true).

- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

I don't need a reason to be a misfit
Whatever the reason, how far I go
When it's my time then I will let you know

It don't take a genius to be an idiot
It don't take a Jesus to save my soul
Well it's my time and it's my time to go

Pedestrian is what I am
An understated samaritan

Where I go, I go alone
As long as I am taking my time

I don't know the answer to be specific
I listened to reason, the reason is true
I did my time, well, now it's time to go

Still love is on my mind

I just wanna hang my head and cry

Voices in my head
Telling me that I am lost
Pills and alcohol
Are making me a lost cause

The song is about the author's break up with Mary. It starts with how he never thought that Mary would leave him and that he would've been used to the feeling of heartbreak by now (bleeding me through my heart is dry/the secret chasm, hole in my heart).

The pain he feels is a sign of his incoming depression (this knife is a symbol; the dark side of night) whilst Mary continues on with her life as if nothing happened (killer's on a run) looking for someone else to ruin (with a halo of lies raising the Hell within us).

He now feels numb (my soul's made of stone) as he feels more and more pain as he dwells on the break up longer (my flame is burning out now, darkness alone).

- song meaning written by u/potlah on r/GreenDay

Bleeding me
Though my heart is dry
This knife is a symbol
The dark side of night

Killer's on the run
With a halo of lies
Raising the hell within us
As the angels fly

There's a rain tonight
Falling from the sky
There's a liar's moon tonight,
The dark side of night

The secret chasm
Hole in my heart
Fire's raging on us
Burning like a scar

Made of flesh and blood
My soul's made of stone
My flame is burning out now
Darkness alone

There's a rain tonight
Falling from the sky
There's a liar's moon tonight
The dark side of night

The little pieces of truth
They stick around forever
I should have known about you
Before we got together

But we did it
Yeah we've done it
I wonder what did I get myself into
With you
When I piece it together, baby,
I put so many holes in you
Yeah, you

Little pieces of sticks
And a bucket of stones
I'm afraid I'll be leaving you all alone
But I come back around
Got some pieces of truth
Even though it won't make no difference to you-
Yeah, you

Digging trouble
With a shovel
You serve it up in so many different ways
Now I got so burned that I learned
Not to hear another word that you say

But we did it,
Yeah, you did it,
What the fuck did I get myself into
with you
When I piece it together baby,
I put so many holes in you

Digging trouble
With your shovel
You serve it up in so many different ways
Now I got so burned that I learned
Not to hear another word

Don't mess with the mess-around
